About Mitchell Katz Winery > Wine HistoryThe Ruby Hill Winery building was originally erected in 1887. The solid brick building stood out as a gem of the Livermore Valley. Named Ruby for its bright red soil, the original founder, John Crellin, consistently produced the finest wines in the Livermore Valley from this fertile soil. The structure survived many different owners and operators over the years, until the heavily timbered building met its demise on November 8, 1989 due to a suspicious fire. The fire left only the walls standing. These ruins remained intact for more than twelve years until the building was carefully demolished in May, 2002. Today you see an architectural replica, formed exclusively of bricks and keystones from the Ruby Hill Winery building of 1887. The Mitchell Katz Winery is honored to call this their home. |
